Why I Started Cooking Home-Cooked Meals for My Dog

If you’re anything like me, your dog isn’t “just a dog.”

They’re family, best friend, travel buddy, emotional support, and tiny furry soulmate, all rolled into one.

And because of that, what I feed my pups matters to me.

For years, I grabbed whatever dog food looked “healthy” on the shelf. The packaging always showed fresh meat, vegetables, and happy dogs running through fields, so I assumed it was good.

But then I started paying attention to something…

Anything that can sit on a shelf for months (sometimes years) usually needs preservatives, fillers, and ingredients I would never cook with in my own kitchen. And something about that just didn’t feel right anymore.

So I slowly started experimenting with home cooked meals.

Not fancy. Not gourmet. Just real food.

And honestly, everything changed, their energy, digestion, skin, mood, and even the way they looked at me at mealtime.

This is a little peek into what I do and why I love it.

Why Shelf-Stable Pet Food Worried Me

I’m not here to bash brands or scare anyone.

But when I started reading labels, I noticed:

  • Ingredients I couldn’t pronounce

  • Long lists of “by-products”

  • Fillers like corn, wheat, and soy

  • Synthetic vitamins added back in because nutrients get cooked out

  • Preservatives so the food can last forever

And then it clicked…

Real food doesn’t last like that.

If I left chicken and rice in my pantry for two years, I’d be terrified to feed it to anyone I love, so why was it okay for my dogs?

That’s when I slowly started replacing part of their meals with fresh, gently cooked food.

What I Usually Cook (Simple & Balanced)

I keep it REAL simple.

Here’s my basic formula:

Protein + Cooked Veggies + Healthy Carb + Good Fats

Some of my go-to ingredients:

Proteins

  • Chicken breast or thighs

  • Turkey

  • Lean beef

  • Salmon (occasionally)

Veggies (always cooked + chopped small)

  • Carrots

  • Green beans

  • Spinach

  • Zucchini

  • Pumpkin

Carbs

  • White rice

  • Sweet potato

  • Quinoa (sometimes)

Healthy fats

  • A tiny drizzle of olive oil or coconut oil

  • Occasional sardines in water

Everything goes in the Instapot with water or broth, cooks low and slow, and then I portion it out. No garlic, onion, salt, or seasoning.

Their bowls are clean, shiny, and LICKED, which every dog mom knows is the best review ever.

Important Note: I Still Talk to My Vet

This part matters.

Every dog is different, and I always check with my vet or a canine nutrition pro when I change something big with food.

I’m not replacing professional advice, just sharing what works for my pups and my heart.

Balanced nutrition matters, especially long-term.

The Biggest Change I Saw

Within weeks I noticed:

  • Shinier coat

  • Softer fur

  • Happier tummy

  • More energy

  • Less itching

  • And honestly… they just seemed happier

And I felt better too, because I knew exactly what was going into their bowls.

Real food, real love.

Final Thoughts: Do What Feels Right For You

This isn’t about perfection.

Some days they get fresh food.
Some days they get high-quality dog food.
Some days life is busy and I do the best I can.

But choosing more real food, more often, feels aligned — especially with the Sacred Pup mission of love, mindfulness, and care for our animals.

If this inspires you, start small.

Replace just one meal a week. Watch your dog. See how they feel.

Because when our pets feel good, everything feels lighter, softer, and more sacred.
